Footings Support Foundations
Footings, also known as footers, are used to support foundations where surface soil is less than optimal for constructing a subsurface foundation. A footing provides an even surface to build a foundation and resists the upward forces of the soil while supporting the weight of the building or structure. Footings are generally built to be wider than the foundation, distributing the load across weak soil and adding strength to the foundation.
Reinforced concrete footings are used as a means to support foundations. There are two kinds of reinforced concrete footings.
Grade beams (link to ‘grade beams’) are used in weak soil conditions. They are often constructed to work in tandem with a deep foundation solution such as helical piles. Grade beams can rest on the soil or on pile caps, making a strong even surface for the foundation. Spread footings, also known as “T” foodings, are designed to rest directly on the soil. They work well with shallow foundations where soil is compacted and stable. In conditions where lateral loads are a concern, grade beams and spread footings can be used together.
Soil Type Makes A Difference
Different soil and environmental conditions call for different kinds of footings. Weaker soils will need a grade beam system, but compacted soil will need a spread footing system. Without the proper footing, a foundation can fail, crack or crumble.
