What are concrete masonry units?

Concrete masonry units (CMUs) consist of reinforced concrete footing with blocks mortared together in cells filled with concrete for superior reinforcement. CNT Foundations prefers CMUs when we install additional support in the crawl space under your home’s foundation. A CMU is identical to the type of foundation on which your home is currently built and is ideal for supporting problems like framing deflections, over spanned floor joists, deflected girders, and other issues under your home. CMUs are a permanent solution to your foundation problems.

How do CMUs compare to the Screw Jacks that other companies use? Let’s find out:

Why use CMUs instead of Screw Jacks?

Concrete masonry units may be more labor intensive to install, but they ensure quality for low cost. In addition to being the best, permanent solution, CMUs are often more economical than the gizmos that other companies will offer. Some companies choose to use Screw Jacks for additional support rather than installing CMUs because they do not possess the skill or experience to properly install CMUs. The difference between the two products is shocking:

  • CMUs rest on a reinforced concrete footing. These units have been designed and approved by the building code to withstand hurricanes, earthquakes, and other disasters that are considered by the building code.
  • Screw Jacks rest on a gravel base, which is not a permanent, stable foundation solution and does not meet any building code requirements. Screw Jacks are laterally unstable because they are unreinforced and do not connect to your foundation.

Do CMUs really last forever? The answer may surprise you.

CNT Provides Lifetime Warranties

In 15 years of experience, CNT has installed tens of thousands of CMUs without ever having to warranty a single one. Other companies offer a 25 year warranty because they like to give themselves some wiggle room to constantly adjust their products. CNT offers a lifetime warranty because are confident you will never need it. If you ever have an issue with your CMU, we can reshim a CMU pier, but we are confident that you will remain satisfied with your CMUs because we believe in doing the job right the first time. We like to call our warranties “the warranty you will never need to use.”

Over the years, we have noticed competitors imitate CNT. This includes our warranty. We have seen our competitors go from a five-year to a 25-year to a “lifetime” warranty without ever changing their products or installation techniques. Don’t be lured into a false sense of security with an inferior product. Trust the company and products with the reputation that backs up their guarantee.
